10 Common VSTEP Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Updated:

Quick answer: Most points lost on VSTEP come not from a lack of knowledge but from repeated mistakes: not previewing Listening questions, getting stuck on one Reading passage, writing too few words, missing parts of the task and memorising speaking answers. Knowing these 10 mistakes helps you keep your points on your first attempt.

Listening

  1. Not previewing the questions: use all the preparation time to underline keywords.
  2. Choosing the option with the same words as the audio: the right answer is usually paraphrased; identical words are often a trap.
  3. Dwelling on a missed question: let it go at once so you don't miss the next one.

Reading

  1. Reading every word from the start: read the questions first, then look for the information.
  2. Getting stuck on one passage: give each passage about 15 minutes and always answer all 40 questions.

Writing

  1. Writing too few words: under 120 words (Task 1) or 250 words (Task 2) loses marks.
  2. Missing part of the task: a letter must answer every point asked; an essay must answer the right question type.
  3. Spending too long on Task 1: Task 2 usually counts double, so keep 40 minutes for it.

Speaking

  1. Memorised answers: examiners notice immediately and mark fluency and naturalness down.
  2. Answers that are too short: each answer should have a main point, a reason and an example.
The fastest way to fix these mistakes is to take timed mock tests under real conditions and review every wrong answer. The VSTEP Practice app scores Listening and Reading as soon as you submit, and gives you marking criteria and model answers for Writing and Speaking.
