VSTEP C1 Preparation: What It Takes to Score 8.5
Quick answer: VSTEP C1 (Level 5) needs an average of 8.5 or more, so there is almost no room for a weak skill. The main difference from B2 is precision: near-perfect Listening and Reading, an essay with deep argument and precise vocabulary, and fluent, natural Speaking where ideas come without long pauses.
Who needs C1?
English lecturers, some secondary-school English teachers depending on the standard, PhD candidates at some universities, and professionals who need certified advanced English. For most other purposes B1 or B2 is enough.
How B2 and C1 differ
| Skill | B2 | C1 |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | Gets the main ideas, a few mistakes in Part 3 | Catches details and the speaker's attitude in long lectures |
| Reading | Strong on passages 1–3 | Accurate on the academic passage 4 and inference questions |
| Writing | Clear structure, reasonable argument | Deep, critical argument with precise and varied vocabulary |
| Speaking | Covers the points, some hesitation | Fluent, natural, develops ideas easily |
A plan for learners already at B2
- Listening: practise Part 3 daily and do dictation on the clips you miss.
- Reading: read English news or popular science for 20 minutes a day, focusing on inference questions.
- Writing: 2 essays a week, compared with a model answer, noting good expressions.
- Speaking: record Part 3, listen back and score yourself on the criteria, paying attention to fluency.
In the VSTEP Practice app, choose C1 as your target when you create your study plan: the app prioritises the hardest parts and adds more full mock tests as your exam date gets closer.
